Think Novemeber is Too Late for a Wedding?

This wedding was on one of the last possible days for shooting outdoors this season. The Public Gardens look so pretty in the first photo. I love the primary colors! To the woman on the right side of the frame who walked past the camera at the perfect time... nice boots! : ) One of the best things about this wedding was the up lighting during the reception. If you're considering up lighting, don't think about it just do it, it makes all the difference. The lighting transformed this simple and contemporary styled ballroom into something you might see on TV. Props to Brian Worley at Your-Bash.com who planned this beautiful wedding. Credit is also due to the folks at The Ritz Carlton, Boston Common. The staff were great. They were so attentive and really not snooty for such a fancy place. I love the decor of the Boston Common Hotel, it's clean, contemporary but still feels warm with lots of blonde and dark wood. Edson likes this! : ) I must also give credit to my good friend Christin of Christin Khan Photography who was the principal photographer at this wedding. She hired me as a second photographer.... just in case she went into labor! Good luck Christin! Her baby is due any day now : )

Traveling Studio: Holiday Family Photos

I heart this photo shoot! I've been wanting to photograph at the Friendly Toast Diner in Kendal Sq. (Cambridge, MA) for quite some time now. I'm so grateful to the bride and groom who got all dolled up after the wedding for this post-wedding photo shoot. I should give credit to the Trash-the-Dress guy. Ever since TTD took off, I've had several opportunities to photograph brides and grooms after the wedding. The beauty of it is that it allows the photographer to be creative without the time constraints of a wedding. It also allows the bride and groom to get more photos for their album without having to sacrifice their precious time on the wedding day. The later photos were taken at The Stata Center at M.I.T. How great is that building!? My hat goes off to Frank Gehry, the architect.

Fall Family Photos

This cute young family asked me bring the Traveling Photo Studio to their beautiful home in New Hamphire, at the absolute peak of the fall foliage. It was breathtaking. It reminded me of what I'm missing as a city dweller. The quite streets, the dappled sunlight beaming through the trees and the quaint town center were all such a treat to witness. It was great too because the little, little baby was just born and it's so great to be able to get photos without having to truck the newborn to the mall or to a photo studio for pictures. Many of you may be counting the minutes before the Thanksgiving holiday. I hope you enjoy the time you have with friends, family and loved ones. When I was a wee little boy, I had a shiny sticker of a gum ball machine on the back of my closet door that read Count Your Blessings. That idea has "stuck" with me as a reminder to think about, and mentally list all the things that I'm thankful for. Thanksgiving is a day witness, bear in mind and appreciate all of our blessings. I also have to pay respects to the many Native Americans that we share the positives and remember the hardships of these times. I hope you have a happy holiday!

Another lovely wedding post. The various colored flowers and boutonnieres, the fall foliage as well as the place cards all added a lot of visual interest to the decor. On another note, you can't tell in the photo but what was special about this wedding dress was the fabric. It was really shear and soft. It hung with elegance and shimmered with class. Here is the first part of another wedding we photographed at Zukas Hilltop Barn a few weekends ago. You'll probably notice the leaves on the trees in the photos that are no longer here. That's because I made the mistake of blogging my weddings out of order... I hope you don't mind (my guess is that you probably don't care) This couple was so genuine, so warm and overall such a pleasure to work with. I look forward to photographing the bride's sister's wedding next year. I'd like to comment on the 4th photo, the one of just the bride amidst the foliage. This may appear to be a small technical detail but it actually makes a big difference in who you choose for your photographer. The reason why the photo looks the way it does is because of the lighting technique that we use at DiasPhoto. It's a soft diffused light that makes you look better. Very few photographers employ this method because you have to pay an assistant to just hold a light and not shoot. I feel confident that I can do the job that you hire me to do without having my assistant taking pictures to back me up. If you like the option of having 2 photographers, we offer that in addition to the assistant that helps us light photos properly. Excuse my pontification : ) P.S. Today's my birthday, I'm 34!!!!

This past Saturday we photographed this wedding, Monday we edited it and Wednesday we're uploading it for the friends and family to view. Having an efficient work flow for our clients is a big part of what we do. In addition to having great photos, you need to have a studio that can deliver in a timely manor. If you can't tell, we try really hard to make you happy! Hopefully the photos show that. It was a warm, country wedding at Zukas Hilltop Barn in Spencer, MA. As usual the staff did a great job. Despite the countless weddings I've photographed there, I've never seen the entire Day Spa. I must say it was pretty impressive. Bella Cakes also did a superb job with the delicious cupcakes.... mmm! Check out the place card holders that the groom made with a chainsaw! Lastly, you gotta love the babies. There were so many little babies at this wedding, they were all beautiful and joy to have at the wedding.

You may remember this couple's engagement photos in an apple orchard. They got married this past weekend and we just finished editing and uploading the photos to our online proofing site. A Love That Lasts Long

When photographing couples, it's easy to tell the ones who have that kind of connection that'll last forever. Maybe the subtle kind remarks, a loving gesture or just the basic sweetness between them. I believe this couple has that. Such a great e-session, I'm sure they'll have a warm and entertaining wedding. We photographed at the Tower Hill Botanical Gardens in Boylston, MA. It's a beautiful location for an engagement session.

Yay, another fun couple gets married and I'm there to photograph them! This wedding took place at The International in Bolton, MA. We got lucky because it was raining mostly all day, but then the clouds broke for a few minutes right at the perfect moment and we were able to get a few nice shots outside. The cupcakes that were in lieu if a wedding cake were delicious, by-the-way. Are cupcakes really delicious these days or what? They were definitely not that good when I was a kid. These were scrumptious. You'll probably notice the damask backdrop in the faux-to booth (our free alternative to the photo booth) it was really fun, suited the couple and added another dimension to the wedding photos. The Apple of His Eye

I had a great time with this couple. We photographed this engagement session at Tougas Farm in Northborough, MA. Their wedding is coming up soon, thankfully we were able to get the photos taken in time to have a few pictures printed up for the wedding. We are also offering these new Guest Book albums made up of the photos taken at the e-session. It's an 8"x 8" album where on the left side is the photo and on the right side is an area for guests to sign. They're pretty cool, if I may say so myself. The grandfather of the bride-to-be has this antique car collection, which is where the Ford truck came from. What a great prop! The apple orchard, the pumpkin patch, all of the photo locations that day were great. I have to thank the bride-to-be for choosing a great location, yet again. Hope you enjoy the pics! : )

Bright and Boisterous 2

I love this first shot! The sun shining through the trees, the low angle, the crowd jumping and at their peak... very satisfying. In addition, what you may not be able to tell is that the crowd is lit evenly with a special light that we use. Without it, the people would all be dark and underexposed. I always work with an assistant who is there to hold a second light. That is one of the secrets to making photos look special, and ultimately... professional. You'll also notice we busted out the faux-to booth, our photo booth alternative. It's a service we provide for free to all of our clients that want it. At almost every event by the end of the night, people loosen up and start heading over to the live-photo booth. That's when the craziness starts and the really funny photos happen. Also, check out her hair and make-up company WeddingTresses.com, they did a phenomenal job and are really professional.

They say rain on your wedding day is good luck, I believe it. Rain brings the crops and the flowers... and the abundance. Also on the positive side, rain makes for interesting photo op's with an umbrella, in addition to the great lighting that the clouds create. Here are a few of our favorite photos taken by our amazing associate photographer Kelly, on this rainy wedding day She recently photographed this wedding at Zukas Hilltop Barn in Spencer, MA. Zukas is one of my favorite places to work. The site has a great country elegance, and with the fall foliage... it's spectacular. What sets this venue apart most though, is the service and the people. They are among the nicest, most personable you'll find. Definitely check them out if you're planning a wedding.

Another great wedding at Lake Pearl Luciano's in Wrentham, MA. They did a really great job and the food was delicious. One of my favorite things about this wedding was the flowers. Harper Floral's arrangements were incredibly fresh, practically bursting with life. The Calla Lily bouquet was held together really well. I've noticed that sometimes bouquets are kind of loose and are torn apart by the end of the day. Definitely check them out if you're planning a wedding. The bagpiper, the orchids, the cake, it all came together to create a beautifully planned event.

Sacred Vows and Sunflowers

OMG, I love this post-wedding shoot! This is my new favorite. You may recognize this couple as I've photographed their engagement session, dress fitting, wedding, they were in my promo video and now... the post wedding shoot! I had envisioned a photo of them in a field of flowers but was unable to find the perfect location. After discussing my ideas with the bride, she told me about Weir River Farm in Hingham, MA. I had been anticipating this field of sunflowers from the moment I heard about it. As it turns out, it was a truly incredible experience. My fiance was my assistant that day, as well as all of our other shoots with this couple. We had all grown to know each other and had built a greater rapport. The setting sun and the fresh air set the scene. We all felt a little bit giddy as we began creating these images together because we knew that we were doing something new, and we all did our part. I felt invigorated creatively, the couple picked the spot, got all dressed up and provided us with themselves as subjects. The love and emotion they brought with them was a bonus. My assistant was particularly on point that day as well. In summation, this was an amazing shoot that I loved, hopefully you'll enjoy it too : )

The orange and yellow mokara blossoms, and the yellow cymbidium orchids accented the entry to a wonderful autumn season. One of the places I photographed the couple was in the restaurants wine cellar... the sincere kiss was sweeter than the wine.

What to Wear for a Portrait Session

The first thing to know is that there is no right or wrong answer. Every photographer will have different preferences. Truth be told, the photograph is ultimately about you and/or your family, so do what feels best.

Having that said, there are a few things that I would suggest to avoid and things to shoot for.

Do Wear:
-What you like to wear and what you feel good in, that's the most important.
-Coordinating outfits are great.
-Accents and colors that compliment each other are the goal. If the baby is wearing a particular colored shirt, maybe Dad's collared undershirt can accent that color. If Mom’s wearing a certain color, maybe she can accent the color theme with her accessories.
-Colors that you know work well on you.
-The feeling you want to convey; lighter shirts on top give the pictures a more casual and bright look. Darker shirts on top give the portraits a more serious and thoughtful feel.

Don’t Wear:
-All black or all white tops, it doesn’t create much visual interest and can make for a tricky exposure
-Big logos
-Busy patterns that may overwhelm the photo, and distract attention from the subjects and your expressions
-Things that are too reflective, some eye make-ups that have glitter in them, and things that shimmer will also reflect the camera flash. They can be distracting and can look a little weird.
-Try not to wear the same exact outfit as the other

Engaged Couples' Survey

Engaged volunteers needed!
Cristina Reitz, a doctoral student at the University of Virginia is looking for volunteers for a study of attitudes towards marriage and parenthood among engaged couples. The study consists of a 25-30 minute online survey. To qualify for the study, you must be 20-35 years old, live in the U.S., and plan to marry or have a commitment ceremony within the next 365 days. You and your romantic partner must not have children, and this must be the first marriage for both of you.

You can:
-Help a doctoral candidate;-Increase the pool of scientific knowledge;
-Support research on marriage and families; and
-Spend some time thinking about your relationship!

She is working with Dr. Charlotte J. Patterson, a Professor of Psychology at the University of Virginia. This study has been approved by the University of Virginia Institutional Review Board #2009025800.

Last fall I had a fun time photographing this loving couple with a free engagement shoot in Cambridge, MA. Just a few weeks ago I had the honor of capturing their remarkably gorgeous wedding at the InterContinental Hotel Boston. The night ended at the modern and chic Radius in Downtown. The blushing bride and groom had all the components of their wedding detailed from months before; from the aisle decor down to the customized blue low dunk Nikes. As this is the last installment for this wedding post series, I just wanted to highlight the importance of perspective and detail. I always aim to depict moments from different points of view, angles and perspective. When shooting, I keep in mind to capture what the couple experienced, planned, observed, or did not even notice. We all know that wedding days are the busiest events at its most simple form. Some couples plan years in advance, others only months; either way I'm comfortable enough to know that I will capture details you've orchestrated and even memorable times you might have missed. From the A-line gown of the bride to the ascot of a tie (hey, that rhymes!) we will make sure that years from now, when you look back at the moments stilled in time, you feel the same way you felt on your special day... almost like how Bostonians feel when we look back at the 2003-2004 World Series Championship Game win against you know who!:)

It's always great to see camaraderie and sportsmanship among players of rival teams. But the joy expressed throughout the day with this loving couple, put the bias of teams aside to instead be joined as one. The elegant wedding was not only accented with angelic floral pieces by Roxanne of Living Accents, but also with the hand crafted architecture of Our Lady of Victories Church located in Downtown, Boston. From the smiles of the bridesmaids to that magical kiss to the infinite staircase symbolizing their never ending commitment to love each other, this day wasn't just the beginning and end of an anticipated event, but more so the start of a growing, loving marriage... you can see it in his eyes and hear it in her laughs.

Here is the first of a 3 part wedding post. You may remember the engagement session from this couple, which is where the Red Sox-Yankees wedding theme began. They had an amazing wedding at The Fairmont Copley Plaza. Despite the rain that day, we were able to get some amazing photos. We had planned several cool outdoor shots that day but had to recalculate due to the rain. It all turned out great. A big part of what wedding photographers have to do it think quickly on their feet. I actually enjoy working on-the-fly like that, it's exciting. You might be wondering what the second image is. Although it may look something like a flower, it's actually an upward angle of the wedding dress petticoat. I fell in love with this photo the moment I took it. It was love at first click. Here are a few favorites from our most recent wedding. Looking for a new color scheme, check out this tangerine and chocolate themed wedding. You'll probably notice that the bride chose all different style dresses and shoes for the wedding. The ceremony was hosted at the Colonial Hotel,
as well as the reception which was held under a tent. The staff at the Colonial Hotel located in Gardner, MA did such a great job. It started raining minutes before the ceremony and luckily, they were prepared. There was an indoor location ready and waiting for us which was bright and beautiful. This weeks wedding was photographed on Saturday, edited on Sunday and online ready for viewing on Monday. We do our best to have the pictures ready for viewing as soon as possible. I know that whenever I photograph an event, I can't wait to see the photos and I'm sure others feel the same. I've decided to post more photos from each wedding so that you can get a better feel for what the wedding looked like, so check back tomorrow for more photos from this event. Beauty Abound

This is the first of a 2 part maternity/baby photo session. The main image of the couple on the bed is meant to be a diptych. The second photo will be taken once the baby is here. The photo will be set up identically to this one, only the baby will be in the middle. We had such a beautiful photo session with this couple. The are so in love and it couldn't have been more apparent. They must have really been focusing their hearts and minds on each other and the baby during the photo session because I feel a deeper vibration in the images. The couple was easy to work with seeing as they are both actors and artists. Their openness to my ideas allowed this shot to happen. Originally, I was concerned that a photo in a bed would be a bit too risque for a pregnancy session. Often times, ideas for photos sound really strange beforehand. But they went for it and I feel it was a very successful photo! It just goes to show... trust your photographer even if the idea sounds a little crazy : )

Volunteering is Rewarding

You may remember a few months ago I volunteered my services for MARE (Mass. Adoption Resource Exchange). I'm so happy to share that the little boy I photographed for the Heart Gallery, sponsored by MARE, has been placed with a family! I hope that the photo was able to facilitate that process. The photo will continue to be on display in the Heart Gallery and feature a “Matched with a Family” sticker on it. This was my favorite session of the day. It was the last session and with the sun going down, I was able to get more creative. I've photographed this family through out the years. Our history goes way back. I photographed their engagement session, the wedding, the pregnancy/maternity, the newborn baby, all the way up until now with the baby at 18 months. Get ready! This wedding has a lot of photos. There are so many that I like, I've decided to just go with it. Hopefully you'll enjoy seeing them all. This wedding took place at Granite Links Golf Club in Quincy, MA., and was catered by The Gourmet Caterers, yum. The ceremony took place at the Holy Family Church in Rockland, MA. The DJ, who was seriously among the best I've heard was John Wells from the Event Connection. The videographer was Video Visions Forever. Caterer Review: Gourmet Caterers at Granite Links

Welcome to the first post of the Caterer Review. I will be reviewing all of the dishes provided at the various wedding venues that we work at through out the year. This week brought us to Granite Links Golf Club in Quincy MA where Gourmet Caterers provided the food. Today I'm reviewing the Fillet Mignon

Fillet Mignon-

I should preface this by saying I am the consummate carnivore. From Kobe beef burgers to New England Venison, I've tried everything (except for veal, it's a moral issue) and enjoyed many. This dish was worthy of the word gourmet. The cut of meat was of top quality, juicy and tender. I've had Fillet Mignon that was too tender and just didn't have a proper mouth feel, that was not the case here. Cooked to a perfect medium rare, this fillet was absolutely among the best I've had. It was well seasoned, plated and delivered quickly as to not get too cold. The vegetables were bright and crispy, snappy and al dente. I ravaged the delicious mashed potatoes but would have liked to taste a little less butter in them. Overall this was a simple but amazingly delicious dish, only to be out done by the chefs at Lakeview Pavilion.

I have to mention the catering staff here are above and beyond the rest I've seen. They are quick, efficient and in great numbers. I should also note that the wedding staff at Granite Links are all there until the end of the night (or at least until I left) making sure that everything is going well. They were very professional and well organized.

My best e-session ever! I had so much fun working with this couple. They were adventurous and willing to try a night time photo session. When I first saw them that night I was amazed at how good they both looked. The red shoes with the black dress are so simple but strong, clean but fiery. The yellow flower in her hair was classic and fresh. His crisp jacket and fresh haircut would have been the icing on the cake if it weren't for the fact that her designer friend made the dress. They're a totally cute couple and I wish them the best wedding ever!

Here are the latest photographs from DiasPhoto. This couple, (like all of our clients) were great to work with. A loving couple who planned a sweet wedding full of smiles and welcoming hearts. The ceremony took place at St. Mary's Church in Milford, followed by a reception at the DoubleTree Hotel in Milford. For info on their florist check out Wildside Florist, also in Milford, Konditor Meister made the cake, and DJ Dan Maloof kept the crowd moving. The story behind the dreamy book-in-the-tree photo is pretty cute. The bride would spend hours in this tree as a child, reading. I thought it to be a really heartwarming memory for the family. They were all so wonderful to work with, I'm happy to share this wedding with you.

Photo Booth Alternative

Congratulations to Kathleen and Michael! This past weekend's wedding was a smash hit. Everyone had so much fun with the backdrop that we brought with us to the wedding. The photos shown here look like they were taken in a photo booth. But actually, they were simply taken by me, in front of this Damask backdrop that we inconspicuously placed in the corner of the reception area. Guests kept coming up and asking us to have their picture taken. This isn't exactly like a photo booth because there isn't anything to walk into and their aren't any filmstrip photos to take home with you. But on the positive side, this doesn't cost any extra. We're happy to bring the backdrop with us to your wedding if you decide that you'd like that, at no extra charge. Wedding Photo Booths are great fun but can cost $1000-$2000. Photo booths can also be big and take up a lot of space. Having just a backdrop means that you have a real live human being taking your photo. That means photos with better expressions, and people always fit inside the frame with no one getting cut out of the picture. July 4th Weekend

This past July 4th weekend was such blast. We had the good fortune of spending it with family and friends which is rare seeing as most years at this time I'm working a wedding. Today I'm happy to feature a few photos that I took, as well as a few that my fiance/studio manager took.

The last few photos of Dad with baby on his shoulders were taken by her. She's becoming quite the up-and-coming new photographer. These were all taken at the Arnold Arboretum of Harvard University, (which is actually where my fiance and I are planning our wedding ceremony) a great palce to go for a walk. It's a true urban oasis.

Family portraits are always very rewarding because it's so easy to see the value in it. Children grow up so fast and if you don't photograph them now, you'll never get today back. We recently had this e-session (engagement session) at Smolak Farms in North Andover, MA. I also learned that they do weddings there as well. If you're getting married and are looking for a cute, country farm style wedding, you should definitely take peak at their website. Another thing to consider in choosing your venue is the wedding coordinator. I met Sarrah (the wedding coordinator), she showed me around the farm, was very friendly and surely would be great to work with. The world gets a little smaller day by day.... wedding by wedding. The commitment, devotion and marriage of two people is pure beauty. It is enormously fulfilling to see people from different cultures, religions and backgrounds loving and laughing together. This Indian-American wedding took place at the Sri Lakshmi Hindu Temple, in Ashland, MA. It was followed a by a beautiful reception at the Newton Marriott. Red Sox & Yankees, Together at Last

Last week brought us to Christopher Columbus Park near the North End in Boston for an engagement session. The couple was really fun and had the great idea to get a few shots with baseball hats on of their favorite teams. I then come to find out that he's from New York and is a Yankee fan. She's a hometown girl and of course a Sox fan... how could she not be : ) Red Sox and Yankee fans can live together in harmony! They have a great wedding planned at the Fairmont Copley Plaza, I'm sure it will be beautifully elegant. The Heart Gallery: Helping Children

Last week I donated my photography services to the Massachusetts Adoption Resource Exchange (MARE). Organized by MARE, The Heart Gallery is a striking exhibit of portraits of children in the state’s foster care system in need of adoption. Most of the youth have been waiting at least one year to find a family to call their own, and include school-aged children, sibling groups, children of color, and those with emotional, intellectual, and physical difficulties.

The goal of The Heart Gallery is to raise awareness about adoption from foster care and to find adoptive homes for the more than 500 Massachusetts’ children who wait. The exhibit travels to various venues across the Commonwealth and permanent displays are in all four Jordan’s Furniture stores. We are grateful to Jordan’s for its commitment in helping to find permanent families for children in foster care.

Since the inception of the Heart Gallery in Massachusetts in 2005, 75 percent of the children featured are now with safe, permanent, adoptive families.

The Secret Proposal

Even though it was a an unseasonably warm day in December when I planned to propose, it was still a New England winter day. The crisp air was clear and bright. My accelerated breath shot from my body like a steam engine. I think there is a universal exhilaration that happens when we put ourselves in this situation. Chances are usually pretty great that the proposee will say yes.... but you never really know. So often you hear stories of people who've been together for years, all of a sudden start shaking, knees buckle and knuckles whiten over the engagement proposal. I wanted to have several events planned through out the day which had meaning. Just a proposal and maybe dinner, didn't seem like enough. I planned several events, each representing an aspect of our lives that I wanted to highlight.

The day began with the proposal in front of The Milky Way in Jamaica Plain, where she first walked into my life. She said YES, so we quickly scampered off like preteens at Disney World.

First stop, Exhale Spa in Back Bay, Boston. We attended a yoga class which represented the spiritual connection I've felt with my wife-to-be. We meditated on the happiness, the commitment and the entirety of what we we embarking on. The facility was clean, serene and simply amazing.

We then walked to Beacon Hill where we pampered ourselves with a manicure and pedicure. To all the guys reading, I only got the pedicure... that's more manly right? : ) Anyway, that was to represent the comfort in life that I wish to experience together. Life may not always be massages and manicures, but we strive for the creature comforts that we've been blessed enough to enjoy.

We drank coffee, walked and talked about life. We laughed and loved all of the little moments. In retrospect, my vision of the experience was dreamy like a bright photo in soft focus. We then went to the Park Plaza where we celebrated rest! This is where I presented to her these Lily bulbs, seedlings that represented our future family (neither of us new that this part would come to fruition quite so soon) We made plans to plant the bulbs, and care for them as they bloom into beautiful flowers.

Then was the ever so important nourishment. Sorellina's restaurant was absolutely delicious, refined like a fine wine, an epicure's delight. We feed each other in so many ways, we were beginning on the right foot. We topped the night off with Sheer Madness a comedic performance at The Charles Playhouse, an appropriate location as we begin to truly play house.

If you couldn't tell, this is me proposing to my now fiance. It's been a long engagement because, the birth of our daughter put the wedding planning on hold for a bit. It was kind of ironic how within days of the engagement proposal, I lost my father and conceived our child. Life is a trip! I just came across these photos that were taken by a good photographer friend of mine Ava Hedayatzadeh, and felt the urge to share. The idea came from another friend of mine who wanted me to secretly photograph his proposal. Thus the birth of the secret proposal photo. The hardest question now is... who will photograph our wedding!

Gluten Free Wedding Cakes

Gluten is hot... hot like a polar bears toes. But even though it's not the sexiest topic, there are a lot of people with dietary restrictions such as gluten free diets, ask the Celiac Foundation. According the their website some 300 million people are allergic to Gluten.

Disease go undiagnosed. If you have any other dietary restrictions such as dairy-free, vegan or nut-free, you may want to check out Kristen at Bella Cakes in Marlborough, MA. She has a really cute shop right on Main street. I was there last week photographing her in the kitchen as she worked on a cake. In addition to being really sweet (yes, the chef and the cake) she has a lot of attention to detail. I know some bakers will make you a nut-free cake for example but if there are nuts in the facility, that could be a problem. There are no nuts in this establishment. Having peanut butter and jelly for lunch... nope. Want to munch on some granola... wrong. No nuts. I would definitely recommend Bella Cakes to anyone looking for a wedding cake. I was also interested to find out that she has cake decorating parties for kids as well, I thought that was pretty cute.

Our recent trip to DC to visit family was excellent. The weather was beautiful and the flowers were fruitful : ) We had been to DC many time but still found ourselves at the tourist spots searching for a good photo. DC is chock full of photo op's. Mothers and Daughters

My heart is a tulip. It bursts with the vibrant colors of love and life. Reds, yellows and purples SRING! My child and her mother (as a child) This may appear as some kind of technical before and after photo but it's not. These are photos of my beautiful fiance and my glorious daughter, taken at about the same age. The photo on the left was taken an undisclosed number of years ago (I wouldn't dare post her age, I know at least that much) and a photo of our daughter taken a few days ago. Everyday I learn more about each of them and fall deeper in love with both. After speaking with my mother-in-law, I learned how my fiance's disposition as a child was so similar to my daughter's. Bright, cheerful, alert and amazingly happy in the morning. Like Mother... Like Daughter. Thank you to all the mothers and daughters that make the world a softer, loving and accepting place. Why is Wedding Photography So Expensive?

Why is Wedding Photography So Expensive? I mean really... how much does it cost to take a few digital pictures? I understand the sentiment out there but the reality is much different. To have someone photograph your wedding, they really have to be a professional. To be a professional wedding photographer, they need to fully commit themselves to the job. That means a lot of things but what's most important to the couple getting married is that they can trust their photographer. To build that trust we (photographers) need to do everything we can to be the best we can be. So what about the nitty gritty? What cost's so much? The obvious costs would be:

Assistants, at the wedding and in the studio

Albums

Prints and products

But there are other costs that if your photographer is aware of, then you know that he/she knows what they're doing and a true professionals, things like:

Taxes-professionals are not going to cut you a deal if you pay in cash because we have to pay those taxes regardless of what we charge you. 20% comes off of the top of your wedding payment, that's big

Health Insurance-this one is also huge, i.e $1000/month is not uncommon for a family

Shipping-it really adds up at the end of the year

Insurance-your photographer should be fully insured for accidents, liability and equipment

Equipment-woah, these cameras are around $5K each, and you have to have a backup

Advertising-a full page magazine ad can run over $7K each

Education-being committed to the craft means continually learning i.e. trade shows, seminars, webinars, books, lectures, professional organizations, fees.

That's just to name a few. There are even more costs but I'll spare you the pain of listing them all. In short, if your photographer doesn't charge close to the average (national average wedding photography cost is $2800) there is a good chance, they will be out of business in 10 years.

Who says the "terrible two's" are that bad. This little guy was so fun, a dream to photograph. Even though this photo shoot is part of the traveling studio series, Mom and Dad drove in to Boston to have their precious little boy photographed by yours truly. East Boston has lots of parks to photograph in, as well as lots of little nooks and crannies with tons of character. Check out the blue background photo... love it!

These photos were taken at and near Pier's Park. It's a great location for photos, especially if you're getting married at The Harborside Hyatt or Spinelli's.

Vendor Meals: To Feed or Not to Feed

Do vendors need to have meals at the wedding? And if so, does the wedding couple provide it or does the caterer? It's a good question and one that is asked quite often. In short, the couple needs to let the caterer know how many extra meals will be needed for vendors. You should also remember to find out if your vendors are bringing assistants and how many in total. But that's not the only thing to consider.

Another issue to think about is when are your vendors are getting fed. For example, if you want to maximize the time that your photographer is actually taking photos, have the caterer feed them first. What always happens is that the vendors get fed last after all of the guests. They have to sit around while everyone is eating, then when people are almost finishing dinner, that's when the vendors sit down to eat. Not the most logical way to do it. For example, when dinner is being passed out and people begin eating, there aren't many great photo op's. Rightfully so, the photographer won't be photographing people as they're inserting a fork in their mouth.

Instead, let the caterer know to feed the vendors first, that way they get done eating first and are ready to start working as soon as the guests are finished eating. Keeping an eye on the vendor meals will ensure a smooth dining experience at your wedding, and that you're getting the most work out of your vendors.

Photographing kids in the home environment is really the best way to do it. There's no waiting in line at the portrait studio while your child gets tired or bored. Every so often I will do a commercial job like this one. It was definitely fun to do something new. Wm Duggan Moving Company, a subsidiary of Atlas Van Lines is leading the industry in green technology. Yes, they have a hybrid moving truck. Tying the Knot - The North End

A well deserved congratulations goes out to this young couple. You may recognize the bride-to-be because she is my wedding and office assistant Melinda. I met Chris, her fiance for the first time and am so happy because he's a really sweet gentle kind of guy, or at least with her. He's probably a lot more tough when he's on the football field. I also want to wish a whole hearted good luck to Chris. He's waiting for the NFL draft, as an upcoming prospect.

This first shot is titled Tying the Knot. It's a good example of my mode of working. I like my photography to be artistic with creative meanings behind them. This is also part of a greater body of work that I'm putting together. It consists of engagement sessions in Boston Hot Spots. This time we shot in the historic North End.

You may notice in the second shot, the couple is standing between a strong and compelling statue of Paul Revere spreading his message on a midnight ride, and an old church steeple. I felt it an appropriate metaphor for the shot. Also don't forget.... spring is coming, schedule your own engagement session today.

Five Month Favorites

Our traveling studio just had another photo shoot. Our shooting space was a little tight but we were still able to get two locations to shoot in. I was really happy about the flowers for the background, they looked really great with the red vase and green table. This beautiful little baby is 5 months old now. Her and her Mom were very charming and a pleasure to photograph. Here are my favorites from the shoot.
